Betty Benson, the mother of three children was an inspiration to all who knew her. A shining example of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of love. Born with Rheumatic Fever, she faced many challenges but her love for music and dance kept her alive and fighting for years. Betty enjoyed her hometown heroes such as Frankie Beverly, Maze, and Teddy Pendergrass, whose music and dance moves became lifelong sources of joy.
She attended West Philadelphia High School, where she excelled in track and field and even won a medal at the prestigious Penn Relays. Betty enjoyed participating in neighborhood dance and singing contests. Betty's love for beauty and cosmetics led her to pursue schooling in cosmetology.
She loved different color hair dyes, wigs, any stylish hats that brought out her natural beauty. Later in life when my grandmother started her own beauty service in a shop by her side participating in that venture. For a short while, she and her boyfriend ran a water ice stand at the corner of our neighborhood block where we lived. She was instrumental in helping with my daycare as a childcare provider for four years.
As a mother, she nurtured her children's talents, supporting their dreams and aspirations. She encouraged her oldest daughter to attend a vocational college, introduced her son David to drums, and she encouraged her youngest daughter in sports and modeling.
When the road got tough, my mother looked to her family and friends who took us in and helped her raise us when she couldn't. Through love and support, Betty remained a strong, funny and supportive pillar of our family. rock for her family, always putting her best foot forward to attend family gatherings, the birth of her grandson Cameryn, graduations and sporting events of her grandsons.
She enjoyed telephone conversations and periodic visits from her eldest granddaughter Rasheeda and enjoyed the moments of getting her hair done by her youngest granddaughter Vanessa. In her later years, Betty also enjoyed long conversations with her "grandson" Hassan while he stayed with our family. She found imense joy in her role as a grandmother, showering her grandkids with
love and attention. Betty's life was a testament to the power of hope, perseverance and love
